Academic Program

The academic system of an educational institution forms the backbone of quality in academic delivery. It is not only the quality but also the fulfillment of the training needs and aspirations of the students to empower them to compete in the global market are of greatest significance. In keeping with the needs of multi-skilling and broad based knowledge along with the development of core competence, we at Rai Foundation Colleges have adopted a globally accepted academic system.

Each faculty member works out a detailed Lesson Plan for the delivery of the subject matter, which lays down the sequence in which various topics will be dealt with. In order to further facilitate the learning process, each student is issued with a Course Pack(CP) at the beginning of the semester. The lessons in the Course Pack are arranged in the same order as the lesson plan. Each lesson contains the summary of the subject matter with practical examples/case studies/numerical examples, etc. These are written in conversational language.

Attempts have been made to provide adequate details/explanation of the subject matter. Addresses of the websites, and the list of reference books have also been contained.

Credit System

The Credit system is based on the process of continuous evaluation of the students’ performance, the absence of pass/fail on an annual basis and the flexibility to allow the students to progress at their own pace, subject to the regulation of credit requirements.

Each subject is assigned a certain number of credits depending upon the number of contact hours per week in respect of lectures/tutorials and laboratory / practical / studio work hours.

The credit value is assigned as under:

  • a) 1 Lecture/tutorial hour per week = 1 credit
  • b) 2 Practical/studio work hour per week = 1 credit

Example: A subject requires 3 lecture hours, 1 tutorial hour and 2 practical hours per week to complete the syllabus, it would have a credit value = 3 +1+2x1/2 = 5 Credits.

Earned Credits. The credits for a course in which a student scores a ‘D’ or above grade will be considered as credits earned. Any course in which a student earns ‘E’ grade will not be counted towards his/her earned credits. The student will have a choice of changing the subject or repeating the subject in which he/she earns ‘E’ grade, provided it is not a core subject, in which case it has to be repeated.

Grading System

Award of Grade. The existing system of evaluating a student uses a scale of 101 points (0-100 marks in each subject) with each subject having its own evaluation criteria. Thus adding marks scored in different subjects to arrive at a total and award the student a division (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc) appears illogical. Besides, in the existing system a student scoring 60% marks is awarded First division whereas a student scoring 58% or 59% marks is awarded Second division, but are they vastly different?

It has accordingly been decided to use Letter Grade and Grade Point Average (GPA) system. For letter grades, their equivalent grade points and the meaning of each letter grade, Click here

Registration

Registration is a very important part of the flexible academic system. It is this system only that ensures that the students’ name is on the roll list of each course that he/she wants to study. No Credits is given to a student if he attends a course without having registered one-self. The registration for the courses to be taken in a particular
semester will be carried out accordingly to a specified schedule.

The schedule will be announced well in advance. The registration will NOT be considered valid till the student has paid the fees. The students failing to pay the fee will be de-registered for the particular semester. Advice on selection of subjects. Each student has to study the core subjects. He/ She has the choice of selecting additional subjects (for accelerated achievement), core electives and optional subjects. It is recommended that each student shall consult his/her course coordinator to finalise the choice of these subjects. This depends on minimum/maximum credit limitation, past performance, backlog of courses, pre-requisites, workload, students’ interests and pace of growth, etc.
